How a 'big toy' can give a child a voice.

Sometimes Teddy Bears and their friends had days that just do not work out right.  This big old 'friend' was crying so much over the Orangatang  in the film that his eye suffered.   We had all told our friend here not to put the hands near the face. The eye needed resewing on before the big button was lost. 

We all forgot that the feet had toes.  Rather than put his foot in the mouth our friend found comfort with the toe.  Ho hum.

 Our friend here is tall in height and very round at the middle.   Although us big humans were not afraid of our friend's size the little humans were not sure of him.  In order for our friend to be approached by the little humans something needed to be done.   There was at least one Teddy Bear afternoon tea that he was invited to.  The little humans also came.  Some could only bring a smile while others brought friends or some food to share by all.

There were games played and songs sung.  The theme of the Afternoon tea was "Our World".  Some of the little humans wanted our big friend here to tell them a story about being sooo big.  But the problem was our friend had no voice.  So the little humans took turn in a charades game.

Over the next few weeks though some friendly human made this big friendly toy into a puppet.  When the next time our large friend came to play with the little humans the older ones had been practising how to talk and tell stories "puppet style'.

Over the years since this happened many of the people still remember our friend. They remember the ecological stories that were told. Some of these humans have each done something about their environment.  They to now have a voice.

Rubbish. How to horrify a Teddy Bear!

Such a terrible waste all that rubbish being left behind.   being left behind.  D d you know that when people go somewhere really all you should leave behind is your foot steps.  Besides the rubbish all you take with you are photos or videos and memories?


And then there is always the risk of a fire happening.  What will happen to the tire trucks and other vehicles when they have trouble getting through?

Luckily there are World Clean Up days where all sorts of rubbish is found and taken away.  But why do naughty adults go and fins places to dump home stuff and then they leave this rubbish there.

We just had to go back and talk to others about the junk that was left near where you live. Near us there are piles of things left behind.  We even fund toys.

 So we Teddy's all got together and told 'the dog'.  Most mornings the dog takes his friend on a walk into the Pines.   Here it the dog showing his friend the piles of rubbish.  Thankfully the dog checked too and found not a scent of any Teddy Bears.  But the mess.  Someone is missing out something.

•  Placed in plastic sheets in folder
• Colouring in things – Textas, pens, crayons, pencils.

Methods

• Selection of Teddy bear pictures for colouring to be in folder.
• Selection of colouring things to be on the table.
• As required pictures handed out to be coloured in.

End result

• To be blue tacked onto the wall boards
• To be taken home.

A General History Of the Teddy Bear

There are many stories about how the teddy bear came to be...but, because I am an American, I prefer the American version. As the story goes in 1902, while arbitrating a border dispute between Louisiana and Mississippi, our 26th President Theodore Roosevelt, went on a bear hunting expodition. The hunt was unsuccessful. The hosts eager to please the President, captured a cub and brought it to him to shoot. Teddy Roosevelt sternly refused.This incident was reported to the Washington Post Newspaper. Working for this newspaper was a polictical cartoonist named Clifford Berryman. Berryman decided to depic the incident in a political cartoon, called "Drawing the Line in Mississippi". This cartoon, was eventually published in newspapers across the country. A Russian immigrant and enterpenuer, Morris Michton saw this cartoon. He and his wife Rose operated a novelty store in Brooklyn, New York. Michton asked Rose to make a bear to display in their store window to sell. Next to the bear he placed the Berryman's cartoon and a sign that read...TEDDY'S BEAR. It sold immediately. The couple continued to make more bears. Their bears soon caught the attention of a wholesaler from Butler Brothers. With the financial backing of Butler Brothers, the Michtons opened a company called The Ideal Novelty Toy Company. Roughly at the same time, the German manufacturer Steiff was introducing a toy resembling a bear at the 1903 Leipzig Toy Fair. It was here where a big New York Toy Imported, Hermann Borgford of George Borgford & Co. ordered 3,000 Steiff bears. It was in 1904 when Teddy Rossevelt changed his mascot from a moose to the bear for his re-election campaign. The teddy bear craze began, it was similiar to the Beanie Baby craze of the 90's. It was in 1906 Playthings magazine, when the words "TEDDY BEAR" was first published, "Imported Teddy Bears - Best Quality with Voice!" In 1907 Steiff declared it the year of the bear - Bärenjahre! By the mid 1910's there where many teddy bear companies and many types of novelty teddy bears. Teddy Bear memoribilia was being produced. There were Roller Bears, Tumbling Bears, Teddy Bear china, Electric Eye Bears. It was also very fashionable for children to have their picture taken with their teddy bear. Gordi's interests are t cooking, cleaning, singing and having friends pop in.

Gordi enjoys it when there are not people being critical of his missed keys and hits that open into another unknown song.  Pity Gordi is tone deaf.

As the people in the know say being tone deaf may have something to do with High Functions Autism disorder [Asbergers].  Having said that it explains a lot about Gordi's behaviour patterns as well as the problems with spelling, reading writing and just plain not hearing you as you speak!

British Bear now Olympic merchandise

The decline of British toy manufacturing does not seem to have harmed the UK toy industry as a whole as people still want toys. Plush toys including Teddies) grew at 39% in 2010 / 2011.

Behind this growth has been an advertising drive that heralds "Creativity, resilience and relevance" all playingtheir part in helping the toy industry to weather the past two years" .. " Now the toy industry 

The classic teddy bear has been given an Olympic twist

 needs to maintain its focus on producing toys with great play value at affordable prices,"  states Christine Nicolls [Chariman of the British Toy and Hobby Association]

Toys inspired by blockbuster films proved particularly popular in 2010, with characters from Toy Story 3 bringing in the most revenue.


The trend for fashionable soft toys has led many businesses to take advantage of the 2011 Royal Wedding and the 2012 Olympics.

Official London 2012 merchandise will contribute approximately £80m to the staging of the games and will no doubt generate huge amounts of publicity for the companies involved.

Merrythought is one of the businesses supplying 2012 products and Mr Holmes hopes it will mean "we can make Merrythought products available to a slightly wider and more discerning audience'' and keep the company going for another 80 years.

learning knots again

Clamity Jane Teddy Bear has been learning how to make these different knots and hitches.

• The stopper knot,
• The double over hander
• Reef knot / flat knot or square knot.
• The half knot.
• Round turn and 2 half hitches

Then 'Calamity Jane' and others practiced their snake lashing and square lashing.  Not quite sure why the thing they made stood up but I think it had something to do with the added props.
